We live in a society which, on the one hand, disavows risk: the wilderness is seen as something foreign and full of dangers. Better to cocoon our children indoors with video games. On the other hand, many TV shows depict the wild as something man can conquer — a virtual reality almost that seems to either inflate or trivialize the objective risks out there. It feels sometimes that there is little common-sense middle ground between the two. Here’s a short reflection piece I wrote for Dam Good Trips recently on the subject of risk and the outdoors.
